Area Code FAQ
What is an area code?
An area code is the 3-digit prefix at the start of a North American phone number that identifies the geographic region or rate center the number is registered to. In the US, area codes are administered by NANPA (the North American Numbering Plan Administrator).
How do I find the area code of a phone number?
In a standard US 10-digit phone number (NNN) NNN-NNNN, the first three digits — the (NNN) — are the area code. For an 11-digit international format (+1 NNN NNN-NNNN), skip the leading 1 and read the next 3 digits. You can also paste a full number into the search above and we will extract the area code for you.
Why do some places have multiple area codes (overlay)?
When a region runs out of available phone numbers in its original area code, NANPA adds an overlay — a second area code that serves the same geographic area. Example: Atlanta is served by 404, 470, 678, 770, and 943. Overlays require 10-digit dialling for local calls.
Can two phones in the same city have different area codes?
Yes. Mobile numbers keep their original area code when the owner moves, and overlays mean new numbers in the same city may be assigned a different code. Two phones sitting side-by-side in San Francisco can have 415, 628, or any cellular code from elsewhere.
Are 800, 888, 877 area codes US locations?
No. Numbers starting with 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833 are toll-free numbers, not geographic area codes. They route to a business or service anywhere in North America. NumLocation focuses on geographic area codes for this directory.
